When couples book a May wedding in Massachusetts, they’re usually hoping for blooming flowers, sunshine, and the chance to spend as much time outdoors as possible. For Caitlin and Teegan’s wedding at The Grove at Briar Barn Inn, the weather had other plans.

Rain fell throughout the day, forcing their ceremony indoors and shifting many of the original plans. But if there’s one thing this wedding proved, it’s that a rainy wedding day can still be beautiful, emotional, and full of unforgettable moments.

As a Massachusetts wedding photographer, I’ve learned that the best wedding days aren’t defined by perfect weather. They’re defined by the people, the relationships, and the moments that unfold no matter what’s happening outside. Caitlin and Teegan’s wedding was the perfect example.

Getting Ready at Briar Barn Inn

One of the things I loved about photographing this wedding at The Grove at Briar Barn Inn is how convenient the property is for couples and their wedding party. Caitlin and Teegan both got ready on-site at Briar Barn Inn, allowing everyone to relax and enjoy the morning without worrying about travel between locations.

The wedding colors perfectly complemented the rainy spring atmosphere. Blue hydrangeas were featured throughout the décor, while Caitlin’s honorary bridesmaids each wore a different shade of blue. The result was a timeless color palette that felt elegant, romantic, and perfectly suited to the venue.

One of my favorite personal touches from the day came from Caitlin herself. Knowing that Teegan studied marine biology in college, she surprised him with custom white TOMS shoes featuring blue sea creatures. It was such a thoughtful detail and a fun way to incorporate a meaningful part of their story into the wedding day.

A Private First Look Inside the Silo

Like many couples, Caitlin and Teegan originally envisioned sharing their first look and private vows outdoors. Unfortunately, the rain made that impossible.

Instead, they found something even better.

The silo at Briar Barn Inn provided the perfect cozy setting for an intimate first look and private vow exchange. Since the space was more enclosed than originally planned, I wanted to give them as much privacy as possible while still documenting the moment.

So I did what any reasonable wedding photographer would do: I popped in my AirPods, turned on *NSYNC, and photographed the entire thing without hearing a single word they said to each other.

It might not have been the private outdoor setting they originally imagined, but it became one of the most meaningful moments of the entire day. The emotion on their faces said everything that needed to be said.

Making the Most of a Rainy Wedding Day

Rainy wedding days require flexibility, creativity, and sometimes a little bit of trust.

Thankfully, The Grove at Briar Barn Inn offers plenty of beautiful options regardless of the forecast.

Many of Caitlin and Teegan’s portraits were taken inside the silo, where the unique architecture created a beautiful backdrop while keeping everyone dry. We also used the covered front entrance of the barn and several areas near the bridal suite inside the barn.

While we may not have had golden-hour sunshine, we were able to create portraits that felt intimate, romantic, and true to the day.

Some of my favorite wedding images come from rainy days because couples tend to focus less on the schedule and more on each other. Caitlin and Teegan embraced every change with grace, and that positive attitude shines through in every photograph.

An Indoor Ceremony Filled with Personal Touches

Because of the weather, Caitlin and Teegan’s ceremony was held indoors at The Grove. While rain sometimes requires last-minute changes, the indoor ceremony space provided a warm and inviting atmosphere for their family and friends.

One of the most special parts of the ceremony was their officiant. Rather than hiring someone they didn’t know, they asked Teegan’s best friend to perform the ceremony. Having someone who knew them personally tell their story made the entire experience feel even more heartfelt and authentic.

Surrounded by approximately 80 of their closest family members and friends, Caitlin and Teegan officially became newlyweds in a ceremony filled with laughter, happy tears, and plenty of love.
