When you’re planning your wedding, you want every precious moment captured; from the first look to the last dance. As a North Shore MA wedding photographer (and frequent second photographer myself!), I’ve seen firsthand how having a second shooter can elevate your entire photography experience. Here’s why hiring a second photographer for your wedding is one of the smartest decisions you can make, especially if you’re getting married in Massachusetts or New Hampshire.
Weddings are a whirlwind! With two photographers, you get coverage of both sides of the day. Think groomsmen prep and bridal prep happening at the same time, in different locations. While I’m capturing the excitement with the bridal party, my second shooter is with the groomsmen, grabbing those candid laughs and behind-the-scenes moments you’d otherwise miss.

Having a second photographer means we can capture your ceremony and reception from multiple perspectives. While I focus on your walk down the aisle, my second shooter can get your partner’s reaction, your parents’ happy tears, or a wide shot of your guests. It’s all about telling the full story of your day, not just the highlights.

Family portraits can be chaotic, but a second photographer keeps things running smoothly. While I’m photographing, my second is reading off the family shot list and rounding up relatives, making the process quick, organized, and stress-free. You’ll get to the party faster, and no one gets left out of the photos!

As someone who often works as a second photographer, I love the creative freedom it brings. I can step back and capture those unique, artistic shots, like reflections, wide angles, and candid moments that add depth to your gallery. It’s a team effort that results in a more complete and beautiful collection of images.

From the Beauport Hotel rooftop pool, I was able to capture the ceremony from above; a perspective that shows off the full beauty of the day in a way you just can’t get from ground level. I was the second photographer for this wedding.
Life is unpredictable, and having a backup photographer means you’re covered if something unexpected happens. Plus, two sets of eyes (and cameras) means nothing important gets missed.

Here’s something that might surprise you: I don’t think every wedding needs a second photographer.
If you’re having a smaller wedding with one getting-ready location, a short guest list, and a timeline that isn’t packed from start to finish, a single photographer is often all you need. With a little planning, we can usually build a timeline that allows me to capture everything that’s most important to you.
I’d much rather recommend the coverage that’s the best fit for your wedding than encourage you to spend money on something you won’t truly benefit from.
A second photographer tends to make the biggest impact when:
Every wedding is different, which is why I talk through all of these details with my couples before they book. Sometimes a second photographer is one of the best investments you can make. Other times, I’d rather help you save that money for something you’ll enjoy even more.
Whether you’re planning a wedding on the North Shore of Massachusetts or in New Hampshire, local photographers who work together regularly know the best spots, lighting, and timing for your venue. We’ve got your back, rain or shine!

At the end of the day, every wedding is different. Some couples truly benefit from having a second photographer, while others don’t need one at all, and that’s okay! My job isn’t to sell you something you don’t need. It’s to help you choose the coverage that’s right for your wedding.
